Eunostos Programme · Fuel plant

Rocket Fuel from Dust

A ship that flies home needs fuel, and nobody wants to carry it all from Earth. On Mars you can make it. Dig regolith, bake the water out of it, split the water into hydrogen and oxygen, and react the hydrogen with Mars air to make methane. Methane and oxygen are rocket fuel.

Excavator digs regolith, the Martian soil.

Oven bakes water out of the regolith.

Electrolyser splits water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Methane reactor turns hydrogen and Mars air into methane, and gives a little water back.

Solar power is limited, and it drops at night. Fill both tanks before the launch window closes.

MARTA: "Every machine needs what the one before it makes. Watch for the empty bars."
